Satchel Paige-the New Book and my Cancer

Author Larry Tye has written a new book on one of the great baseball players-Satchel Paige.
The title is : SATCHEL--The Life and Times of an American Legend.
I just started it, and it is a wonderful read.
As I go into the hospital for my stem cell transplant, I can't think of a better book to escape reality and pass the time.
Satchel was my childhood hero.  When my father was 12 years old, in Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, he sold soft drinks, while Satchel Paige pitched in a "Negro" league game.
As a young adult, when I worked at KMPC radio in Los Angeles, I had the fortune to meet Satchel Paige.
Even in 1965 he was in great shape--tall and slender--he came dressed in a dark suit and skinny tie, with black shoes, and white sweat socks.  I met him as he entered the station to be interviewed by sports announcer Fred Hessler and "sports at 6."
When I was in college, I did my first public speaking class based on the autobiography by Satchel Paige, and how he learned to play baseball in the segregated south, while incarcerated in a juvenile facility.
During the summer months, I'll be listening a lot to Ella Fitzgerald, reading "Satchel," and recuperating from my transplant.

THE OBAMA "EFFECT."

UPDATE:(9/13/2009) It appears that the "reform" candidate in the Iranian elections lost--but there are riots in the streets--I still consider this the Obama "Effect."

It appears, after waiting for many years, we have a President who, when he speaks, the world listens.
After his speech in Cairo, an American friendly administration was voted into office in Lebanon.
Now, although the vote still hasn't been counted, and Obama reached out his diplomatic hand to the Iranians, a so called reformer has made a real challenge to the more reactionary elite of that country.
Its not a real democratic election in Iran, because the religious leaders decide who can and cannot run for public office---but it is still a major shift, particularly among the younger voters of the Shia controlled country.
This new Obama Effect is challenging the old world order, and his vision and toughness in the area of health reform, domestically, for example, has brought much of that special interest community into a movement, not seen since the persuasive Lyndon Johnson.
We may not get exactly what we want on the health care front, but because of the OBAMA EFFECT, Americans will see an entirely different health care delivery system, this time around.

Another Stem-Cell Transplant

In a couple of weeks, I go into a big city hospital for a donor's stem cell transplant.
I have had recurring Cancer for over two years now.  I did have an earlier transplant, but it was from my own body, and that didn't work.
The doctor's are thinking that this one will work, because, in essence, I'm getting some one else's immune system.
Of course, the danger here, is that my body rejects the transplant.  At which time, I'll be in some trouble.
The hospital is two hours from my home, and therefore I will have to rent an apartment for 4 months.  I have to follow certain dietary rules, and be very close to the hospital for constant follow-up.
If I get a fever, after the transplant, for example, they throw me into a special isolated Emergency Room, because I will be very susceptible to illness.
Right now, even with my broken foot, I feel pretty good....and still blog.
The week of June 16, I probably won't be able to blog for about a week or so....we'll see.
While undergoing treatment, I love to listen to Ella Fitzgerald....and a friend is going to download on my MP3 player, a professor's entire course on WWII.  This should be very interesting.  I was born in Los Angeles during World War II.
I'll be watching the usual baseball games, but unfortunately, will not be able to attend any major league games this summer. This is a real loss for me.
When I was a young man, I wanted to be a baseball play by play announcer, and my first major job, was with KMPC radio in Los Angeles....where I got to practice sports announcing.

LA Mayor Villaraigosa-- Too Controversial for Governor Run?

Once again, according to the Los Angeles Times, Mayor Villaraigosa is dating another pretty TV news anchor.
Although separated from his wife, the last time he had an affair with a Los Angeles based TV journalist, she wound up losing her job, because of conflict of interest, in her reporting of the Mayor.
There is mounting evidence, with another affair, that Mayor Villaraigosa is much too controversial to run for Governor.
This is a big boost of State Attorney General Jerry Brown, who is likely to capture much of the Latino vote, should Villaraigosa exit the 2010 gubernatorial contest.
Here is an excerpt from the Los Angeles Times story, June 2, 2009.

A Los Angeles television reporter is dating Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, about two years after his extramarital affair with another local newscaster led to the breakup of his 20-year marriage.

KTLA-TV Channel 5 reporter Lu Parker, a former Miss U.S.A., has been dating Villaraigosa since March, station officials confirmed Monday. On Sunday, while working as a weekend anchor, Parker announced a story about the likelihood of Villaraigosa running for governor in 2010.

Dick Cheney Should Shut Up--Draft Dodger--Mean Spirited

I've had it with that famous draft dodger from the Vietnam War, former Vice President Dick Cheney, and his "new openness."
It's hard to believe that a guy who screwed up so badly on the War in Iraq, now gets no scrutiny from the national media, when he criticizes the Obama administration.
He has the audacity to take on President Obama for going to Egypt to make a speech, while Cheney was Haliburton's "boy" as VP.(I make this comparison because Obama is above board and honest about why he is going to an Arab country, while Cheney was making war profits for his former bosses at Haliburton)
President Obama will be making a trip to Saudi Arabia, also.  It's no surprise that he won't get criticized by Cheney for that trip, considering the Saudi's owned the Bush White House.
I haven't heard one reporter ask Cheney why he avoided the draft so many times during the Vietnam War, and then didn't hesitate to send others to their deaths in Iraq.
No one is challenging Cheney on his remarks about Colin Powell, and wouldn't it have been prudent to listen to the former Chairman of the Joint Chief of staff, on going slow in Iraq.

Bob Schieffer - CBS News-A Class Act

Colin Powell smiles at reporters.

During his interview with former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell, on Face The Nation, Sunday, May 24, 2009, Bob Schieffer was at his journalistic best.
He drew out the long standing moderate Republican on Dick Cheney, Gitmo, and the future of the GOP.
Why, this man, who earned the two Purple Hearts---one rescuing a helicopter crew in Vietnam--has to answer to draft dodger, Dick Cheney, and right wing radio host Rush Limbaugh, is a real question for average Americans, who care about decent people running our government.
As long as the media gives credibility to Cheney and Limbaugh, the Republican Party will be out in the wilderness for a long, long time.

Dick Cheney vs Colin Powell--Draft Dodger vs Real Man

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is starting to talk---talk a lot---about nothing.   He avoided the draft in Vietnam 5 times, so he could let other soldiers die in his place.   When he had no chance of being drafted, he dropped out of his PhD course, and went on his political way.
I could care less that he was a draft dodger, but instead he became all "macho man," designed the war in Iraq, and some wonderful men and women lost their lives---their arms and legs, because Cheney was incompetent, and didn't take the advice of a man, who earned a Purple Heart in Vietnam, Colin Powell.
Its no secret that  Gen./Secretary of State Colin Powell, wanted to go slow and study the situation more before committing combat troops to the danger zones of Iraq.
For his experience in warfare, his punishment by Cheney, and Rumsfeld, was to lose his job in the administration.(I don't think Rumsfeld served America in the military.)
So, my question is this:  Why is the media giving so much credibility to the former veep?  Why don't they ask him why he didn't volunteer and serve in Vietnam?
The public shouldn't  have to watch Cheney--the draft dodger, at the same time President Obama is outlining security for America.
The real man--former General Colin Powell, should be given the last word, after Cheney's speech tomorrow.
President Obama's speech is at 10am(EDT), while "Mr." let everyone else fight my wars," Cheney talks at 10:45am(EDT) on Thursday, May 21,2009.

Why Major Corporations Should Spend More Money in Las Vegas

A month or so ago, a major corporation was shamed into canceling a a major get-together at the Wynn Las Vegas.  This was a horrible mistake.
The idea to get the economy going again is to spend money, not save it.
Las Vegas is the perfect place to lay down your buck for that big business get together.
Most of the casino's and hotels in Las Vegas are Union backed, and therefore, even the "drink girls," get a living wage....some of them to the extent of buying a new house and starting a family.
Las Vegas is Americana---where no one cares what your background is, or how much money you have.  Even social status is unimportant, as long as you can spend a couple of bucks at the one arm bandit, or some of the long odds table games.
The art community is busting out in Las Vegas--some of the greatest shows you'll ever see are in Las Vegas.  This helps the creative community to continue to be employed.
The city is having economic difficulties, like the rest of the United States, but spending money there will have a major domino effect on, not only the economy, but the personal lives of the hard working people, who make your stay, memorable.
Hotel rates at the major strip hotels are great right now.  Its less expensive to stay at a 4 star hotel during the week, than it is to stay in downtown Portland, Oregon, or Los Angeles,California.
In fact, on the plane, one jewelry Hp_scanDS_61217840449 entrepreneur, told me that they moved their entire country wide companies from New York to Las Vegas, because it was cheaper in Vegas than going across the street into the confines of that cities hotels.
So, major corporations, get that Mai Tai, or have a beer, and let loose and give your employees a break,
so Las Vegas will have a major come-back.

BOSTON GLOBE MAY GO UNDER--Another News Source Disaster

My friend, Ira, thought I should write more on American newspapers losing out to the Internet age.
More importantly, we are losing our credible news sources.
The Boston Globe Newspaper is the latest print disaster.  Its on the ropes, due to lack of advertising revenue, just like so many others.
So, the real question is: What can we do to stop the bleeding?
You may say, "Why should we care about getting a newspaper at my from door in the morning, when I can just look up news on the Internet?
Because, as we lose real journalists, who are trained in giving us the facts of the story, and are employed by the newspapers, we lose the truth.
Sourcing in the news business is so very important....and it separates rumor from fact.
When the Washington Post, for example, breaks a story on the corruption of a major business or the government---people take it seriously, because of the training and discipline in uncovering such a story.
Just because you read a blog about a story, or lets say, the Drudge report.....that doesn't mean it is 100% factual.
Yet, when the Los Angeles Times, or Boston Globe, goes with a story, you know there is some truth to the journalistic effort to discover the truth.
The only way I see, that we can save some journalistic integrity, is to set up a federal board, like Public Broadcasting, that blindly supports some newspapers, and supplements advertising revenue, to those most credible newspapers.
As long as the federal board has no influence on editorial or news content, it is a possible solution.
Our government should not be involved in the news business.....but perhaps there is a compromise available to save these important sources of news.

Danny Gans Dies. Las Vegas and World Mourns.

(sorry, I couldn't remove advertising from newspaper)

One of the greatest entertainers ever to hit the desert in Las Vegas was Danny Gans.
A 52 year old family man and "health nut," worked his way up to become one of the famous entertainers of Las Vegas.         Here is the latest story (May 2, 2009) on his passing by the Las Vegas Review Journal:

Usually on show nights, Danny Gans joined his band and crew for a short prayer. But on Friday night, for the first time in years, they prayed without him.

They held each others' hands -- tight, so tight -- a circle of 16 in the Green Room, near scores of framed photos of Gans posing with old Vegas (George Burns, Bob Hope, Ray Charles) and new Hollywood (Paula Abdul, Tito Martinez, Ben Stiller.)

  • The 52-year-old impressionist died at his Henderson home early Friday. The cause of death is unknown.

Police conducted a death investigation at the home Friday morning following department procedure, and Henderson police spokesman Todd Rasmussen said investigators don't believe foul play was a factor in Gans' death.

Rasmussen said police received a call about 3:45 a.m. from a woman inside the home in the exclusive Roma Hills gated community off of Horizon Ridge Parkway in Henderson. The woman said that a 52-year-old male was having breathing problems. When officers and paramedics arrived they found the man unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Clark County coroner's office spokesperson said an autopsy was performed on Gans' body Friday. The cause of death is unknown pending toxicology studies, which could take between two to four weeks.

Gans' manager Chip Lightman texted with Gans on Thursday.

"Everything seemed fine. The only difference was, on his day off, he would usually run errands and stuff, and he was exhausted. He hadn't slept well the night before. He laid down in the late afternoon."

Gans' wife woke up in the middle of the night, rolled over and touched Gans.

"She didn't feel him breathing," Lightman said.

She called paramedics. They tried resuscitating him to no avail.

Gans was an athletic and animated performer, an avid golfer who had turned to show business only after a career-ending injury in minor-league baseball.

But he also had undergone surgeries on his neck, shoulder and wrist over the years. The most recent was in November, almost immediately after he ended his long run at The Mirage.

In a statement, Lightman said: "Danny Gans will not only be remembered as a Las Vegas entertainer, but as a man who loved his family, loved God and loved the city of Las Vegas.

"Danny Gans has been my partner and dear friend for over 18 years. I will truly miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife of 28 years, Julie Gans, and three children, Amy, Andrew and Emily."

Wynn Resorts Chairman Steve Wynn also released a statement about the entertainer.

"Elaine and I and all of us in the company are devastated at the loss of our brilliant, talented and loving friend. One of the most unique human beings and entertainers in the world has been taken from us in an unexpected moment. A profoundly tragic event that leaves us all sad and speechless. The loss of Danny to his wife, Julie, his children, Amy, Andrew and Emily, is at this moment impossible to comprehend. We will all try to go on with our lives without our dear friend. At this moment, it seems almost impossible."

"It's the equivalent of a Sammy Davis Jr. Somebody who's multitalented. He can't be replaced," Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said Friday. "There are some people whose memory and reputations will live on, and Danny was one of those people.

"He lived the life he preached. It was always a clean show. It was always a wholesome show. That's the way he really lived. That's unusual in and of itself. Most people are a little bit phony about that, but Danny Gans was not a phony," Goodman said.

Gans was the rare entertainer who, in the fashion of Wayne Newton or Siegfried & Roy, enjoyed a fame nearly unique to Las Vegas, rather than coming to the Strip as an established star.

Instead, the impressionist launched his first headline residency, at the Stratosphere in May 1996, after years of lucrative work on the corporate and convention circuit.

"It was really a fairy tale," he told the Review-Journal in 2000, when he was preparing to open a dedicated new theater at The Mirage.

Gans was born in Los Angeles on Oct. 25, 1956, and raised in Torrance, Calif. His father, Sid, had been a Catskills musician and comedian (before he died in 2003, he was quick to stand up and sing a little when his son would introduce him in the audience at The Mirage).

Gans often related to interviewers and audiences that he turned to his knack for mimicry -- "a fun guy to have on a long bus ride," as he once put it -- after a severed Achilles tendon ended his one-season career in British Columbia, with the Class A Victoria Mussels of the Northwest League in 1978.

He scored a few minor acting roles, including a brief appearance in the movie "Bull Durham," but found more success on the circuit of corporate entertainment. By the time he briefly performed on Broadway in late 1995, he already was fielding interest from Las Vegas.

Gans opened at the Stratosphere in May 1996, and word quickly spread about the impressionist who reinvented a dusty old genre by imitating then-contemporary stars along with the more traditional voices. Some of them were even female: A showstopper was his re-creation of the "Unforgettable" duet with the voices of both Nat and Natalie Cole.

Gans quickly moved to the Rio, where clashes with management resulted in an offer from Wynn to convert a Mirage ballroom into a dedicated theater. He opened in April 2000 and became a fixture there for more than eight years.

The impressionist reunited with Wynn -- who had agreed to sell his properties to the company that became MGM Mirage just as Gans opened -- to take over the Wynn Las Vegas theater vacated by "Monty Python's Spamalot," branding the venue with the new sister property Encore.

Gans launched his new show there Feb. 6. He had performed four times weekly for nearly 12 weeks.

Physical problems occasionally interrupted Gans' eight-year run at The Mirage, as did the stress of losing both his parents in the same year, 2003. An auto accident injured his neck and left hand that same year, requiring neck surgery. In late 2005, he took a three-month break from The Mirage for surgeries on his right rotator cuff and left hand.

Lightman said Gans seemed as healthy as could be. He worked out every day. Every night after a show, he would eat egg whites, spinach and apples. He never ate fried foods. He rarely drank.

"Danny might have drunk two bottles of red wine in a year," Lightman said.

"He was really very health conscious" -- largely to stay in show shape.

"These people paid their hard earned money to see the show, and he would say, 'I'm gonna give them everything I've got,' " Lightman said.

Sens. Harry Reid and John Ensign also released statements reacting to the entertainer's death.

"Danny Gans brought joy to the lives of the millions of Nevadans and tourists who came to Las Vegas to see his show. He was a talented performer who used his celebrity to give back to our community and those in need. Las Vegas is a better place because of Danny Gans. He will truly be missed," Reid said.

"Danny Gans was a talented entertainer and a valuable member of our community whose contributions to help those in need will be greatly missed. Darlene and I will keep his family in our thoughts and prayers as they mourn such a sudden loss," Ensign said.

Gans hosted charity golf tournaments and the Danny Gans Champions Run for Life to benefit children's charities. He started the Danny Gans Junior Golf Academy to introduce youngsters to the game. During his Mirage run, he had "locals appreciation" shows with discounted ticket prices and the proceeds donated to charity. In February 2008, he donated money from one performance to Opportunity Village.

Encore officials said any current tickets purchased on credit cards automatically will be refunded without the need to visit the box office. Services for the entertainer are pending.

"There is a hope of reunion when every one of us is reunited with Danny," the Rev. Gary Morefield of Green Valley Christian Center told the band and crew during Friday's prayer meeting, reading them part of Psalm 119. "It's the hope that will sustain us."

Then Gans' pastor appealed to God. "We need you in this hour more than ever."

And they prayed. And they mourned.

    Obama's First 100 Days+Arlene Specter--America's Great Move

It hasn't been since the Great Depression and the heavy duty societal revolution, with FDR in the White House, that the Democratic Party and social liberalism have made such an impact on the United States.
With President Obama more popular than ever, and even a higher positive rating among south American leaders, he is at the right place at the right time.
There is still a humongous amount of work ahead, but the fact is that with needed health care reform, and Senator Arlene Specter, who changed parties this week, over to the Democratic aisle, the plot is unfolding for a major change in the way the average American pursues their health remedies.

This is not a "wink and a nod," presidency.    Mr. Obama means what he says, and isn't just trying to look good to keep his popularity up, while not following through against special interests to help pressure needed health care legislation.

I look for another moderate to liberal Republican to switch sides this year........Republicans who are tired of social conservatives trying to run the entire party.

Once we actually start seeing such things as new bridges being built, school classrooms being retrofit-ed for solar, and more people at work, we may have another 1950s style economic comeback.

Los Angeles County public health officials report no cases of swine flu

    3:19 PM | April 26, 2009

Los Angeles County public health officials today reported no confirmed cases of swine flu locally but said they were closely monitoring hospitals and schools for signs of the influenza strain.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed 20 cases of the virus nationwide, including seven in California and eight in New York City, according to the CDC’s website. All seven California cases have been in San Diego and Imperial counties. The flu has led to numerous deaths in Mexico.

Dr. Robert Kim-Farley, L.A. County’s director of communicable disease control and prevention, said that none of the cases in the United States was fatal but that local public health officials "feel that this new strain is of serious concern." He added that it would not be "unexpected to see cases occurring in Los Angeles."

Kim-Farley said county health officials had put their operations center on 24-hour watch to detect the virus and were keeping a close eye on schools and hospitals. He said a public health laboratory also had been activated to receive additional specimens from people suspected of having contracted the virus.

He said cases in the United States so far can "be characterized as mild" and that two prescription medications, Tamiflu and Relenza, seemed to be effective in combating the flu strain.

An outbreak of swine flu in Mexico may have contributed to the deaths of as many as 86 people and sickened many others. Authorities there have closed schools and ordered other emergency health measures to contain the virus. Cases also have been confirmed in Canada and are suspected in New Zealand, France, Spain and Israel.

Federal officials declared a public health emergency because of the virus.

"That sounds more severe than really it is," Janet Napolitano, the U.S. Homeland Security secretary, said at a news conference today, according to a transcript of the briefing. "This is standard operating procedure and allows us to free up federal, state and local agencies and their resources for prevention and mitigation; it allows us to use medication and diagnostic tests that we might not otherwise be able to use, particularly on very young children; and it release funds for the acquisition of additional antivirals."

In San Diego, where the first cases of swine flu in the U.S. were reported last week, health officials reported no new cases Sunday, although they warned that more could be found as investigations continue.

Four cases have been diagnosed in San Diego County, and three people have been diagnosed in the Imperial Valley.

Dr. Wilma Wooten, public health officer for San Diego County, continued to warn residents to take seriously any signs of flu and to stay away from work and seek medical care if they are sick. Physicians have been asked to report flu cases to county health officials.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents at the San Diego and Imperial County border crossings have been alerted to look for persons crossing into the U.S. who appear to have flu symptoms. Those persons are then sent to a secondary screening process.

In secondary processing, people can be given instructions on finding medical care and, in extreme cases, denied entry. Agents also have access to masks and gloves both for themselves and for members of the public.

The agency is also in contact with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. So far, no one crossing into the U.S. from Mexico has appeared to have the symptoms of swine flu, officials said.

Jack O’Connell, state superintendent of public instruction, also said today that the public can download posters titled "Keep Our School Healthy" and "Germ-Free Zone" with tips on how to avoid the flu. They are available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese and other languages.

Kim-Farley of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said those with mild illnesses should be staying home. Anyone with flu-like symptoms — such as a fever, cough or sore throat — who has recently traveled to Mexico should see a doctor.

In a statement posted on the L.A. County department’s website, agency director Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding said: "We do not suggest any changes in what you would normally do to avoid either getting sick yourself or passing illness to others: if you are sick, stay home; if your child is sick, do not send him or her to school; cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze; wash your hands frequently, especially before eating and after using the restroom; and do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth with your hands."

Into the Hospital, and Baseball Season Again.

Before I get my next stem-cell transplant, I have to go into the hospital for 2-3 days, to get more Chemotherapy.  This will reduce my current tumors, enough so that I am eligible to receive a strangers stem cells.
For those of you not familiar with the process, the chemotherapy does not hurt, but it is usually tiring.
They space out this process for every 3 weeks, which gives the chemicals time to to leave my body.
Its somewhat like the process of radiation, which can last around two weeks after the procedure.
I'll probably wind up in the big hospital for my stem-cell transplant in the middle of June.
This will be the third year in a row, where I miss much of the major league baseball season.
I usually take in a Dodger, Orioles, and National's game, with my friends.  This is a lot of fun.
Once in awhile, I take in a minor-league game.  Baseball is still a family spectator sport, although, I must admit, at being a little shocked when a second baseman, hitting .250 gets a couple of million dollars a year.

Obama's 80 Billion for Wars Should be added to School Safety--No Joke--Ask Chicago

CBS News ran the following story on their website, Thursday April 9, 2009:

    "Chicago Students Face Daily Violence

CBS Evening News: 32 Public School Students Have Been Killed This School Year, As South Side Violence Rages."

    My take on this issue:
Perhaps, President Obama should forget about Iraq and Afghanistan, and take the $80 Billion dollars he will spend on those wars, and instead put some of the troops---not on the border between the USA and Mexico, but on his own south side of Chicago, and other violent cities.
If gang violence, drugs, and poverty are actually killing our own children, while they try to go to public school, maybe the government should bring back the National Guard from these horrible places around the globe and protect America's kids.
I know that this sounds reactionary, but probably not to an innocent child, just trying to go to school on a weekday, without looking over their shoulder every hour.
You may get nervous by driving downtown at night--just think about 10 year old children, who get that type of nervous going to a classroom.
If our government can't keep our children safe at home, while protecting children abroad, some serious questions have to be asked---such as---what the hell is going on?

President Obama: Move Congress on Saving Economy

Some wall street, and housing experts, think we may have actually hit  bottom in our new economy---sort of a Chinese/French model---growth at any cost, along with extra time off for the Postal Service.
But, where is Congress?   Why isn't President Obama pushing harder and publicly for Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, to get their act together.
Housing, medicine, main street, cities and states, need a big push, yesterday, not tomorrow.
I could care less that there is some "Pork" in the billions of dollars of legislation----"let there be pork," as long as it pays people to work and give retirement and health care benefits.
It would be really nice, for our major, credible newspapers, such as the Washington Post, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, to track special interest lobbyists and how they are shaping the new trillion dollar legislation.  It's almost as if the great reporters and columnists and editors, have forgotten about how these groups, behind the scenes, use their power to either circumvent new laws, or in the case of the medical industry, actually hurt and sometimes kill their constituents.   There are numerous stories of people being kicked out of their health insurance, just at the time they really need it.  How are these powerhouses approaching Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
We need more disclosure...not less.  We need to start spending those federal dollars, already.

My Cancer Slows Me Down, Again

I wanted to write about the amazing Craig Robinson, and his Oregon State Beavers winning the CBI tournament in Texas today, but the last few days have been very difficult, with some complications from my Lymphoma.
It looks like I'm in for the long haul of treatment again:  Stem Cell Replacement and a few weeks in the hospital, trying to kill this non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, that doesn't seem to go away.
As my energy level comes to life, I'll discuss world events.
I'm just hoping that at 65 I have the stamina to keep on going.

Oregon State Slugs It Out to Beat Texas El-Paso in Game One of CBI Playoff

In a game of streaks, Craig Robinson and the Oregon State Beavers, hold on to  beat UTEP before over 8,000 spring break fans, and stopped the team from El Paso, 75-69.
This first, in the best of three games, showed the offensive strength of both teams.  The Beavers came out of the first half, with a six point lead. They immediately gained the advantage with 10 straight points.
But, the Miners, were not to be stopped with their own offensive streaks.
The Beavers will show up in El Paso, tomorrow, for their second game in the series on Wednesday night.
This is an amazing turn-around for the team from Corvallis, and the, "Coach who could."
Early on in the season, new coach Craig Robinson was hoping for just one conference win.  He got that with an early upset of the USC Trojans....and went on to win 6 more PAC-10 games.
In what has turned out to be a minor miracle, the same team has won four straight games in the post-season CBI tournament.
Robinson may not have won the coach of the year for the PAC-10, but he certainly deserves a special trip to the White House, win or lose in this best of three series.
We go into the first day of April, still playing basketball, which, before the season, no one thought would be possible for this team.  However, coaching in college sports is as important as a pitcher is in baseball, and the brother-in-law of President Barack Obama has proved this point.

Oregon State Beavers Host UTEP in CBI Finals

Its Halftime at Gil Coliseum, and Texas El Paso is losing 35-29 to the Oregon State Beavers Basketball team with around 8,000 fans watching tonight, March 30, 2009.
This is a best out of 3 series.  Perhaps, other than the Beavers improving their team from a season ago, when they didn't win one PAC-10 game, the other news is that the brother-in-law of the President of the United States, coach Craig Robinson, has taken this hapless team to three post game victories, so far, this season.
The Beavers won 7 of 11 conference games this season, a vast improvement over last years dismal season.
Oregon State has not won 3 post season games, since the 1960's when they played in the NCAA finals.
Stay tuned for the second half  results:

Where Will We Receive Our Real News?

During the dark ages of television news, we used to watch the networks battle it out for 30 minutes, each week night.  When there was a story of interest, we would turn to our morning or afternoon newspaper to get a balanced and thorough report.
In the larger cities, commuters would listen to their all news stations for serious stories of interest. including rush hour reports.
included in some of these venues, would be a "think" piece or an in-dept report.
In the Newspapers, particularly, I could go to my favorite columnist for a slam dunk follow-up on some of these issues.
Even today, many of us, who follow legitimate news, often go to our favorite newspaper....perhaps, on line, to read an objective political story by a well known reporter.
Not only are certain newspapers, "going under" but some will be read exclusively on the web, as the advertising revenues are not enough to provide for a daily print edition.
The New York Times is now experimenting with using an hour on MSNBC TV to expand their readership and circulation.
Much of local television news is a joke, with  teleprompter readers (anchors), trying to find something hopeful about the most serious subject..... which they squeeze in between local color, sports and weather.
You may say, "I'll just go to my newspaper on line, and read in-depth on a story which is important to me."  The problem here is that many of these seasoned reporters will be tossed aside in cost cutting measures.
Once the legitimacy of the news sections are gone....so too will be the last of the readers...and thus the entire news industry.
Other than the government buying out the Los Angeles Times and Washington Post. where will we receive our real news in 10-15-20 years?
Perhaps a major company like Google will pony up the cash to buy a couple of major newspapers, and keep them going.  Maybe the fed's will consider giving them a tax break.
Other than drums and a rumor mill....I'm not sure where we will get our legitimate news in the future.

MSNBC & Morning Joe Blow It At 3AM PDT

Early Thursday morning was not a good time for me, but it was horrible for the 6AM, EDT audience of all-American Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski , and their news panel made up of "Willie" and that Bostonian, Mike Barnicle.
For any heterosexual, it was nice looking at Mika's tight sweater, but the guests with their cups of Starbucks coffee, were noticeably taken back, with Scarborough consistently making sexual innuendos out of Mika Brazinski looks and sumptuous breasts.
I thought I would hear something on the controversy surrounding Philip Oliphant's latest political cartoon,or that Clinton's latest foray into Mexico was going good, or even, how the hell were the NCAA's shaping up.
Instead "Morning Joe," had to get more silly than Regis Philbin petting a cute Monkey.

Oliphant decided to take on the Jews....or rather Israel, beacuse after they gave the Palistinan's the Gaza strip, for peace 2 years ago, then the  militants fired 10,000 missles against the Jewish State, the cartoonist didn't say anything.  After all, silence is golden.

I wish Mr. Oliphant would use his quick wit, to show how African-American Sailor's, surving in WWII were not allowed to go on shore leave to Austrailia, because of Aussie prejudice.  The cartoonist is not anti-Black, but he does hail from Austrailia.

Except for her looks, I have never liked the Brzezinski family.....lets face it Zbignew, her father, was  a sub-par National Security Advisor.
I remember, many years ago, during the Carter administration, how a group of Jewish-American's went into his  office to discuss the latest sales  of military jets to Arab countries.  The first words our of his mouth was, "You people!"   I'm surprised only about 3 million Polish Jewish Men, Women and Children were put to death by the Nazi's in Poland, with his attitude.  I'm sure Mr. Brzezinski is not an antisemitic, but neither does he appear to be a kind man.   His daughter does a pretty good job as co-anchor with the former Republican Congressman Joe Scarborough.

There were a lot of things to talk about, Thursday morning, but nothing like a little sexism to get the show going, with a strong cup of coffee.

After watching the first half-hour of "Morning Joe," I decided to go back to bed, and await my latest medical procedure to knock out the pain in my right foot, caused by a cancerous tumor.
